Happy New Year!

I am very happy that I could crack open my 2011 agenda this morning. There is nothing like a new agenda.

I hope you all had a fabulous holiday! Sorry for my hiatus from the blog, Twitter and Facebook but I had some time off over the holidays. Happy to be back though, and now that we are in the same calendar year as the next festival I have a feeling this year is going to go just as fast as 2010.

I came back to work with good news sitting in my inbox! Our application to the Pepsi Refresh Project has been accepted. The entire grant program is a really cool project. Individuals and organizations can apply for funding from Pepsi, but it’s the Canadian public that decides who is worthy of this funding by voting for their favourite proposed projects. People just have to create an account and they can vote 10 times per day for different projects.

And this round The Word On The Street is participating! We are really excited about our project, this is something we have wanted to do for some time but haven’t had the resources available.  We basically want to expand KidStreet (a component of our festival) by bringing our scheduled festival children’s authors to Toronto schools in September and October. These authors would give fun presentations to Toronto students incorporating both readings from their books and interactive activities, much like our Children’s Activity Tent.

We want to provide an opportunity for Toronto kids to really engage with Canadian children’s authors. We hope that by providing a forum for children to interact with books and the authors behind them that this will foster a love of reading in Toronto children at a young age, and help them grow into readers and increase literacy in our community. We are starting with Toronto schools because we are a Toronto festival and we’re located here, but if the program is a success we hope to see it expand in future years! We’ve already had some Toronto schools contact us!

Voting begins tomorrow (Jan. 4, 2010) at noon and we would really appreciate your support to see our dream come to fruition. If you have any questions about it, feel free to contact me (Kristen) at kristen@thewordonthestreet.ca.

Thanks!
