A Moderator and Panellist’s Perspective: Anita Windisman

Anita Windisman participated in two sessions on our Digital Drive Stage: E-Publishing, E-Books, E-Reading-The E-asy Guide for readers and Writers at 12:30 and Look at Me! Look at Me! – How to use the Social Media to Market your Work at 4:00.

As a book lover, I’ve regularly attended The Word On The Street as a consumer.  For the 2010 event though, I had the pleasure of being a more active participant – both moderating a panel, and speaking on a panel.  I was fortunate enough to be part of the inaugural Digital Drive Stage that focused on the topics related to the new forces that are changing the publishing landscape – eBooks and social media.

In my opening remarks as moderator for the session E-Publishing, E-Books, E-Reading-The E-asy Guide for readers and Writers, I provided the following 3 statistics to emphasize just how rapidly the industry is evolving:

  • eBook sales statistics for July 2010 have been released from the Association of American Publishers.  They report trade eBook sales were $40 million, a 150% increase over July’s sales of last year at $16 million.
  • According to Amazon, eBook  sales have already surpassed hardback book sales and will surpass paperbacks sometime in 2011.
  • Publisher Little Brown and Company for the first time is bypassing print altogether and publishing straight to eBook  – a work by Pete Hamill, New York City historian and author of 8 books.

During my questioning, the panelists – industry experts Ashleigh Gardner, Cynthia Good, Natascha Helbig and Allen Lau – provided their perspectives on eBooks, but essentially all agreed that there were more opportunities than threats in the publishing realm – whether it be from the perspective of publishers, authors or consumers.

For the second session, I joined fellow panelists Nina Lassam, Mark Leslie Lefebvre and Julie Wilson in a discussion on how social media can be used by writers to market their work.  Being an online marketer since 1997 and now an author myself, I have fully embraced the digital realm – as have my fellow participants.

We all were passionate in relating how authors can use the top 5 social media tools to our advantage for marketing and self promotion:  blogs, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn. To illustrate how Twitter works, I had a bit of fun and took a photo of myself and my fellow panelists on my BlackBerry before the session – that I shared online.  Similarly, during our talk, I also snapped a picture of the audience from our elevated platform and Tweeted it as well! In the end, the point made was that all of these new and free social media tools now level the playing field so that individual authors have the same promotion vehicles available to them as large publishers do.

For both of these sessions it was standing room only, as the tent was overflowing with audience members – a testament to how popular the topics were.  We can only look forward to having a bigger tent next year!

When I got home at the end of the day, I was delightfully surprised to find that the CTV coverage of The Word On The Street focused very heavily on the eBook aspect, and actually captured me saying one of the statistics I related above.

All in all, I really enjoyed the day that allowed me to have a different perspective of the event from the inside!
