Volunteers are a huge part of The Word On The Street every year. So huge in fact that we have upwards of 250 volunteers helping us out both leading up to the Festival and on Festival day.
Volunteering is a great way to enjoy the Festival and to work hands-on in the world of Canadian writing and publishing. Some tasks volunteers will help with include: pre-festival administrative tasks, festival set-up/take down, guest services, event management and logistics, programming support, and exhibitor relations. Volunteers will work between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., working four-hour shifts that fit around their schedule.
Every volunteer receives a complimentary t-shirt as well as lunch or a snack on Festival day. We will also hold a few volunteer appreciation events throughout the coming months, including a Volunteer Appreciation Day at the Ontario Science Centre, and a free movie screening at The Revue Cinema . Volunteers will even have chances to win monthly prizes. All this while gaining practical experience, earning community service hours and making new friends! Some volunteers also like to sign up together. We have several returning mother-daughter and husband and wife teams.
This year, we have lots of volunteers coming from the various writing, publishing and communications programs offered at Toronto colleges and universities. Volunteering is a great way to start networking and making connections with your future peers. You may even get to meet some of your favourite Canadian authors!
Many of our volunteers come back again and again because their experience is so fulfilling every year. We even have some volunteers this year who have volunteered at The Word On The Street in other cities! Here’s what some of our returning volunteers have to say:
“I’m SUPER gung-ho to volunteer again this year”
“I had a ton of fun volunteering last year”
“I wouldn’t miss it!”
“Thanks for hosting such a great event!”
